ASCO 2023 | Future directions in the field of vaccine approaches to immune modulation in oncology

Lana Kandalaft, PhD, PharmD, MTR, University of Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland, discusses future directions in the field of vaccine approaches to immune modulation in oncology, highlighting the synthesis of vaccines and utilizing whole tumor lysate. In addition, the standard of care modalities like chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be employed as in-situ vaccination approaches. These treatments can release antigens and have an immunomodulatory effect on the tumor microenvironment and the immune system. This priming effect can then be boosted through the use of synthetic vaccines, enhancing the efficacy of these therapies. Such strategies hold promise for further developments in the field of vaccine-based immune modulation in oncology. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
