WCLC 2026 | Applicability of international lung cancer screening guidelines in Zimbabwe
Tinashe Mazhindu, MBChB, MMed, University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe, explores findings from a retrospective study examining the validity of international screening guidelines for lung cancer in Zimbabwean patients. Guidelines from the American Cancer Society, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, U.S. Preventative Services Task Force and the European Society of Radiology would have identified between 16 and 30% of confirmed lung cancer cases as high-risk for screening, indicating a large deficit. In addition, the study found a big deficit between confirmed cases and screening guidelines in female patients, and a prospective study will be carried out to investigate the risk factors associated with this. This interview took place at the IASLC 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
