WCLC 2026 | Factors affecting lung cancer risk in areas outside of the US and Europe

Tinashe Mazhindu, MBChB, MMed, University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe, examines how current lung cancer screening guidelines may need to be adapted for patients in Zimbabwe, based on findings from a retrospective study. International guidelines consider only smoking and age to determine risk, however other factors in Zimbabwe including indoor pollution and mining activity may also contribute to risk. Being able to quantify exposure and determining what level of exposure increases the risk of developing lung cancer is essential to improving lung cancer screening in this area. This interview took place at the IASLC 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
