BNOS 2022 | Identifying who requires a CT scan in staging for brain tumors

Patients with recently diagnosed brain tumors may require a staging CT scan and determining which patients are eligible for a CT scan is necessary for efficient use of available resources. Hemanth Vupputuri, MBBS, The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool, UK, describes research assessing risk factors that predispose patients to having metastatic brain tumors. Out of a cohort of 400 patients, 222 were suitable for the purpose of the study. Factors including a history of cancer and lesion sizes of less than 4cm were found to indicate metastatic brain tumors, and a validation cohort additionally confirmed the findings.
