ESTRO 2023 | Reducing carbon impact: 5-fraction regimen for breast cancer treatment

Sofia Rivera, MD, PhD, Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France, discusses the use of a 5-fraction radiotherapy regimen for breast cancer treatment as a means to reduce the carbon impact associated with radiotherapy. By reducing patient transportation, this regimen significantly decreases the carbon footprint of breast cancer radiotherapy. While healthcare contributes to around 4.4% of overall carbon impact, every individual’s effort is crucial in reducing this impact. Dr Rivera emphasizes that the 5-fraction regimen, which has been proven to be non-inferior in terms of efficacy and toxicity through the Phase III FAST-Forward trial, should be considered due to its limited carbon impact. The low carbon footprint serves as an additional reason to choose this regimen for breast cancer treatment. This interview took place at the ESTRO congress in Vienna, Austria.
