ESTRO 2023 | Optimizing ultra-hypofractionated breast RT: streamlined workflow reduces sessions & transportation

Sofia Rivera, MD, PhD, Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France, highlights the shift towards ultra-hypofractionated radiotherapy for whole breast irradiation, driven in part by the COVID-19 situation. To optimize this approach, the workflow at Gustave-Roussy was redesigned to minimize the time between consultation and treatment. The new workflow involved the first consultation on Monday morning, followed by CT scan and simulation, contouring delineation, dosimetry, and validation, all on the same day. The patient then received treatment sessions from Tuesday to Friday, with an end-of-treatment consultation on Friday. A remote consultation on day ten was conducted to assess toxicities and outcomes, followed by regular follow-up visits. This streamlined workflow significantly reduced the number of sessions and patient transportation. The carbon footprint of this new radiotherapy regimen and workflow over one week was assessed to evaluate its environmental impact. This interview took place at the ESTRO congress in Vienna, Austria.
