ESMO 2026 | Utilizing imaging and biomarkers to identify people at risk of cancer

Miriam Merad, MD, PhD, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, comments on the importance of identifying individuals at risk of developing cancer and highlights the potential of combining imaging with systemic or blood biomarkers to strengthen preventive strategies. Dr Merad notes that her group, among others, is working on identifying an inflammatory signature that could be used as a biomarker of risk, which could help identify people who would benefit from immunoprevention strategies. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
