David Yankelevitz, MD, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, outlines the difficulty involved in shared decision-making for lung cancer screening. The concept has been a topic of debate in recent years and many professionals support its elimination. Clinicians believe shared-decision making is restrictive, especially in regard to the amount of time available to deliver necessary information. Dr Yankelevitz proposes that a general view must be formed as to what information must be communicated to the patient.
