Fiorita Poulakaki, MD, PhD, FEBS, CEBS, Europa Donna (The European Breast Cancer Coalition) & Athens Medical Center Hospital, Athens, Greece, discusses recent developments in reducing axillary management for breast cancer to enhance long-term patient outcomes. The SOUND trial (NCT02167490) demonstrates that omitting axillary surgery in low-risk, early breast cancer cases does not impact overall survival and provides excellent regional control, and the SENOMAC trial (NCT02240472) indicates that even with one positive node, axillary node dissection can often be avoided, including in patients who have undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy. This strategy is crucial for preventing lymphedema and improving the quality of life for patients with breast cancer. This interview took place at the 2024 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Breast Cancer Annual Congress in Berlin, Germany.
