ESMO 2024 | Enhancing patient selection in bladder cancer through ctDNA testing

Jorgen Bjerggaard Jensen, MD, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark, underscores the necessity of a systematic approach to obtaining tumor tissue and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) for effective testing in bladder cancer. The TOMBOLA trial (NCT04138628) exemplified the successful implementation of these protocols, ensuring proper blood sample collection and processing. Without such organization, there are risks in delivering targeted treatments, which could lead to unnecessary exposure to costly adjuvant immunotherapy for patients who may not benefit from it. This focus on precision in treatment aims to enhance patient safety and outcomes in bladder cancer management. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
