ASCO 2025 | The evolving role of biomarkers in targeted gastric cancer treatment
Kohei Shitara, MD, National Cancer Center Hospital East, Kashiwa, Japan, discusses the importance of biomarker-based stratification in guiding treatment for patients with gastric cancer. Biomarkers, such as HER2 and claudin 18.2 (CLDN18.2), can fluctuate over time and in response to treatment, underscoring a need for recurrent monitoring through biopsies. Liquid biopsies and advanced imaging can aid in the tracking of tumor cell molecular alterations noninvasively in the future. This interview took place at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago, IL.
