Helene Rundqvist, PhD, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, discusses the results of an 8-year follow-up from the OptiTrain trial (NCT02522260), a randomized clinical study involving 250 women with primary breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The trial included three arms: usual care, combined resistance and high-intensity interval training, and combined aerobic and high-intensity interval training over 16 weeks. The primary outcome was fatigue, with both exercise interventions showing benefits for fatigue, physical functioning, quality of life, and hospitalization rates, although there was no significant effect on chemotherapy completion rates. The 8.9-year follow-up examined recurrence and survival, revealing beneficial effects from exercise interventions, particularly resistance combined with high-intensity interval training. The OptiTrain data were also combined with two previous trials, further demonstrating significant improvements in both recurrence and survival for patients undergoing exercise during chemotherapy.
