Michail Ignatiadis, MD, PhD, Jules Bordet Institute, Brussels, Belgium, describes the use of liquid biopsy and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in managing metastatic breast cancer, particularly for identifying mutations linked to targeted therapies. ctDNA can detect ESR1 mutations for elacestrant, PI3K mutations for copanlisib, and genomic alterations in the PIK3CA/AKT axis for capivasertib. Although these practices are more established in the U.S., the uptake of these assays and treatments is anticipated in Europe soon. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
