ESMO 2026 | Comparing the current roles and toxicities of TILs and TCR cell therapy

Marco Donia, MD, PhD, Copenhagen University Hospital, Herlev, Denmark, comments on the current applications and toxicities of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) and T-cell receptor (TCR) cell therapies. TILs has specific toxicities including those related to surgery, chemotherapy, and IL-2 infusion, while TCR cell therapy has a different toxicity profile, with common cytokine-related syndrome and rare but potentially severe toxicities such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis or immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS). The toxicities of TCR therapy are generally predictable in timing, unlike those of checkpoint inhibitors. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
