GU Cancers 2018 | An MRI-based approach to prostate cancer diagnosis: a urologist’s stance in the debate

The first study illustrating the potential of MRI in the diagnosis of prostate cancer was published in 2006. Although there have since been a number of other studies showing this utility, the use of MRI in this field is still debated. Here, Mark Emberton, MD, FRCS, of University College London, London, UK, discusses the debate he took part in on this topic at the 2018 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, in San Francisco, CA. Speaking from the meeting, Prof. Emberton discusses the results of randomized clinical trials, which he presented to support his case for this technology, including the the PROstate Mri Imaging Study (PROMIS; NCT01292291). He also highlights a further study, which is due to be presented at the Annual European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress 2018.
