Jorgen Bjerggaard Jensen, MD, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark, discusses the Phase II TOMBOLA trial (NCT04138628), which investigated the use of serial circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) testing to guide treatment in patients with non-metastatic muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical cystectomy. Patients with ctDNA+ results received atezolizumab regardless of imaging, while ctDNA- patients are monitored conventionally. Early results show ctDNA’s high specificity in identifying those at risk for metastases, potentially enabling personalized, timely intervention with immunotherapy. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
