Sylvie Bonvalot, MD, PhD, HDR, Institut Curie, Paris, France, discusses her pioneering work in the management of desmoid tumors and retroperitoneal sarcomas, as well as her recent recognition at the ESSO 43 Congress with a ESSO Life Time Achievement award. Initially, desmoid tumors were treated surgically, often leading to significant mutilation due to their size. However, Dr Bonvalot observed that some tumors could regress spontaneously, prompting her to advocate for active surveillance, which she demonstrated to be as effective as surgery in certain cases. Her research revealed that around 50% of patients experience spontaneous regression and may not require treatment. She also highlights the evolution of treatment for limb sarcomas, including the shift from high-dose TNF-alpha to a more effective and better-tolerated lower dosage. For retroperitoneal sarcoma, she emphasizes the importance of percutaneous biopsy for accurate diagnosis and the benefits of compartmental surgery for improved local control. Dr Bonvalot advocates for ongoing international collaboration to enhance patient outcomes. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
