ESMO 2024 | Counseling breast cancer survivors on breastfeeding

Eva Blondeaux, MD, University of Genova, Genova, Italy, highlights the importance of individualized counseling for breast cancer survivors who wish to breastfeed. Whilst breastfeeding is generally safe for survivors based on evidence from a trial (NCT03673306) evaluating breastfeeding in patients with breast cancer, it is a deeply personal decision. Counseling should consider each woman’s willingness to breastfeed alongside the risk of cancer recurrence. Thus, with the lack of data on appropriate surveillance protocols during breastfeeding, there is a stressing need for careful, patient-centered approaches in these cases. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
