ESMO 2024 | Targeting pre-cancer stages for effective cancer treatment
Jianjun Zhang, MD, PhD, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, emphasizes the importance of identifying pre-cancer stages in cancer treatment. Pre-cancers are easier to eradicate due to their simpler molecular landscape, contrasting with the complexity and heterogeneity of invasive metastatic cancer cells. By catching pre-cancerous lesions early, there is a higher likelihood of effective treatment, as these cells are more naïve and may respond better to therapies, potentially preventing the progression to invasive cancers. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
