ESMO 2024 | Akkermansia muciniphila as a biomarker for ICI response in NSCLC

Lorenzo Belluomini, PhD, University of Verona, Verona, Italy, discusses findings from a study (NCT04567446) assessing the role of Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk) abundance as a biomarker for immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) response in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Stool and blood samples from patients receiving ICI with or without chemotherapy were analyzed. Patients with lower Akk levels showed improved progression-free survival (PFS) compared to those with higher or absent Akk levels. Anti-Akk IgG and T cell responses also correlated with worse outcomes, suggesting Akk modulation as a potential strategy to improve ICI efficacy. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
