ESMO 2024 | Importance of minimal sentinel node tumor burden in melanoma staging

Alexander Van Akkooi, MD, PhD, Melanoma Institute Australia, Sydney, Australia, discusses the prognostic significance of minimal sentinel node (SN) tumor burden in melanoma, suggesting it be incorporated into the next American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. Minimal SN tumor burden can differentiate between high-risk and low-risk stage 3A melanoma, guiding decisions regarding adjuvant treatment. This distinction could help identify patients who would benefit from adjuvant therapy while sparing low-risk patients from unnecessary treatment. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
