ESMO 2024 | Exploring the role of olaparib and treatment intensification in breast cancer

Sabine Linn, MD, PhD, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, Netherlands, explores the history and potential role of intensified alkylating chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue in high-risk breast cancer, which was assessed in the Phase III SUBITO trial (NCT02810743). The regimen initially showing promise in early trials, but was later abandoned due to mixed trial results and fraud cases. However, some patients, particularly those with germline BRCA mutations, may benefit from this shorter, intense treatment. Ongoing evaluations in the Netherlands may determine its availability for a select patient subset. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
