SMR 2024 | Evaluating the role of gut and tumor microbiome in melanoma immunotherapy

Saman Maleki, PhD, Lawson Health Research Institute, London, Canada, comments on emerging research on modulating the gut and skin microbiomes to enhance immunotherapy in melanoma. While most efforts focus on adjusting the gut microbiome to influence systemic immune response, new studies are examining the tumor’s local microbiome, especially for skin melanomas that can be biopsied. Insights into the tumor microbiome’s unique role in immune modulation could also open novel avenues for personalized immunotherapy. This interview took place at the 21st International Congress of the Society for Melanoma Research (SMR) in New Orleans, LA.
