Ignacio Duran, MD, PhD, Hospital Universitario Marques de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain, comments on recent kidney cancer research presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress. The CONTACT-03 (NCT04338269) and TiNivo-2 (NCT04987203) trials, both investigating checkpoint inhibitor sequencing in metastatic kidney cancer, found no benefit in progression-free or overall survival, indicating that re-sequencing checkpoint inhibitors does not improve outcomes. The SUNNIFORECAST study (NCT03075423) highlights potential benefits of nivolumab and ipilimumab in non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) compared to tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Additional trials such as LITESPARK-005 (NCT04195750) explored belzutifan, and preliminary data on microbiota-based interventions suggest potential enhancements to checkpoint inhibitor responses. This interview took place at the ESMO 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
