PRIMO 2025 | Optimizing immunotherapy: predictive biomarkers, resistance strategies & personalized medicine

Merrick Ross, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses key challenges in optimizing immunotherapy, focusing on identifying predictive biomarkers and improving treatment response rates. He explains the distinction between predictive and prognostic markers, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right patients for therapy to maximize effectiveness while minimizing unnecessary side effects and costs. Dr Ross highlights emerging strategies to overcome resistance to immunotherapy, including oncolytic immunotherapy with genetically modified herpes simplex virus, which can modify the tumor microenvironment to enhance T-cell infiltration.
