PRIMO 2025 | mRNA vaccines in melanoma: targeting neoantigens to enhance immunotherapy & reduce toxicity

Merrick Ross, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses the use of mRNA vaccine technology in cancer therapy, specifically in melanoma, where personalized vaccines are being tested to target specific neoantigens present in tumors. Dr Ross highlights the potential of this platform, which has already completed a large-scale study with over 2,000 patients, to improve immunologic responses and reduce side effects. This approach is being explored in combination with other immunotherapies and biomarkers to better understand who will respond and how to augment responses, with the goal of reducing systemic therapy and financial toxicity.
