Dickon Hayne, MBBS, MD, FRCS, FRACS, UWA Medical School, Perth, Australia, discusses the expression of carbonic anhydrase 9 (CAIX) in urothelial cancer, noting that while it is generally good, the expression can be variable. Dr Hayne mentions that receptor studies have identified the presence of CAIX in various tumors, including breast and urogenital cancers, and comments on the use of this marker in staging urothelial cancer.
