ESMO GI 2026 | Evolving treatment concepts in liver cancer in 2026

Stephen Lam Chan, MD, FRCP, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China explores the evolving treatment landscape for liver cancer. There is evidence that local or regional therapy could change the immune environment of the liver, allowing synergy with immunotherapy. Traditionally, local therapy would be expected to remove the tumor completely, however now evidence suggests that systemic and local therapy could be combined to produce a synergistic effect and improve the durability of response. In addition, the addition of local therapy to immunotherapy could prevent the development of resistant clones to improve patient outcomes. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
