ESMO 2026 | How is age a risk factor for cancer and can it be a treatable target?

Miriam Merad, MD, PhD, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, discusses the relationship between age and cancer, highlighting that age is the main risk factor for cancer, with most diagnoses occurring after the age of 60. With age, the body accumulates inflammatory components, which drive cancer development, and recent research has identified cyclin-1 as a key molecule promoting cancer, which is a targetable factor. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
