ESMO 2026 | Cellular therapy advances and regulatory approvals in oncology in 2026

Paolo Ascierto, MD, Istituto Tumori Fondazione Pascale, Naples, Italy, discusses the current landscape of cellular therapies in 2026, highlighting recent FDA approvals of lifileucel and afamitresgene autoleucel in melanoma and synovial sarcoma respectively, as well as the approval of satricabtagene autoleucel (satri-cel) by the Chinese regulatory agency. These approvals demonstrate proof of evidence that cell therapies, such as tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), TCR-T, and CAR-T, are effective and are being recognized by regulatory agencies. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
