ASCO 2024 | Using gut microbiota to enhance immunotherapy for breast cancer
Alexis LeVee, MD, City of Hope, Duarte, CA, comments on a Phase I/II study (NCT02778685) that revealed the gut microbiome may be associated with response to immune checkpoint inhibitor combination therapy in metastatic breast cancer. A future study will analyze stool samples to examine the correlation between gut bacteria and immune-related adverse effects (AE). The objective will be to identify biomarkers that will enable immunotherapy treatments to be personalized to each patient’s characteristics. Specific bacteria that could be used as probiotics to support immunotherapy will be developed. This interview took place during the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
