SITC 2022 | Addressing and removing unconscious bias in patient selection for IO trials

Carmen Guerra, MD, MSCE, FACP, Perlman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, discusses the need to reduce unconscious bias patients of color might face during immunotherapy trial recruitment. Mutual mistrust between clinician and patient may reduce the number of ethnic patients recruited and as a result of previous training programs failing to reduce bias in clinicians, the Just ASK™ Training Program was implemented. By enforcing cultural humility in staff, clinical trials can be diversified. This interview took place at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Society for Immunotherapy in Cancer (SITC 2022) in Boston, MA.
