ESMO 2026 | AI-assisted audit of guideline adherence in head and neck cancer

Davide Smussi, MD, ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia, Brescia, Italy, discusses an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted audit of clinical practice guideline adherence in a large real-world cohort of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Non-adherence was observed in a substantial proportion of patients, mainly due to tumor board judgment or treatment adaptation for age and comorbidities. Older age and locally advanced stage were associated with non-adherence, which was linked to worse overall survival. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
