ESMO 2026 | QoLATI/DAHANCA34: QoL after TORS vs IMRT in early-stage oropharyngeal cancer

Hani Channir, MD, PhD, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark, discusses results from the randomized Phase II QoLATI/DAHANCA34 trial (NCT04124198), which compared transoral robotic surgery (TORS) with (chemo)radiotherapy in early-stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. TORS-based treatment was associated with better swallowing-related quality of life (QoL) at 12 months, although the difference did not reach the prespecified threshold for clinical relevance. Objective swallowing, survival and disease control were comparable, supporting both treatments as options for selected patients, guided by patient preferences. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
