ESMO 2024 | Trends in skin cancer mortality and screening practices
Hildur Helgadottir, MD, PhD, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, discusses the stability of skin cancer screening practices over the past two decades, with no significant changes observed in accessibility to primary care or diagnostic excisions. However, from 2015 onward, there has been a notable decline in mortality rates, particularly in younger age groups. Whilst mortality rates in patients over 60 remain unchanged, the reduced incidence in younger populations, along with advancements in immunotherapy and targeted treatments, likely contribute to this decrease in mortality. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
