Marleen Kok, MD, PhD, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, Netherlands, discusses the management of stage I triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), highlighting the lack of clinical trials and data on the benefit of chemotherapy for this specific disease stage. Dr Kok notes that the prognosis for patients with stage I TNBC is generally good, and therefore, it is essential to identify patients with indolent biology who may not require chemotherapy, and explores the potential of biomarkers such as tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) to inform treatment decisions. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
