ESSO 43 | AXSANA: reevaluating the necessity of axillary dissection in breast cancer treatment

Rosa Di Micco, MD, PhD, San Raffaele Scientific and Research Hospital in Milan, Italy, discusses the potential impact of the ongoing AXSANA trial (NCT04373655). The study may aims to reveal whether axillary dissection is still necessary, particularly if it’s only used as a staging procedure. Dr Micco suggests that with advancements in prognostic scoring systems, such as the CPS+EG score, surgeons might not need axillary surgery to gain staging information, potentially leading to a continued shift away from this procedure in breast cancer treatment. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
