ESMO 2026 | Survival maturity of perioperative and adjuvant checkpoint inhibitor approvals

Abhenil Mittal, MBBS, NOSM University, Sudbury, Canada, discusses a systematic review of ten Phase III trials that led to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals of perioperative, neoadjuvant and adjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors across solid tumors. Most approvals relied on immature overall survival data, yet many received the highest-level guideline recommendations, highlighting a gap between the robustness of evidence and the strength of a recommendation. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
