ASCO GI 2025 | Advancements in cellular therapy for GI cancers
Kohei Shitara, MD, National Cancer Center Hospital East, Kashiwa, Japan, summarizes the evolving landscape of cellular therapy for gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. While not yet a standard of care, Dr Shitara emphasizes the potential of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T and other cell-based therapies based on numerous recent trials, such as Claudin18.2-targeted CAR-T cells. However, complex manufacturing, conditioning regimens, and cost remain barriers to clinical implementation. Emerging strategies, including in vivo CAR-T delivery via viral vectors and innate immune cell-based therapies, offer potential solutions. Ongoing trials continue to explore innovative approaches, expanding the future role of cellular therapy in GI cancer treatment. This interview took place at the ASCO GI Cancers Symposium 2025 in San Francisco, CA.
