ASTRO 2022 | Bioimpedance spectroscopy for detection and early intervention of breast cancer-related lymphedema

Chirag Shah, MD, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, discusses methods for the detection and early intervention of breast cancer-related lymphedema. Lymphedema is a complication of breast cancer treatment, associated with therapies including axillar lymph node dissection, lymph node radiation therapy and some forms of systemic therapy. With 10-30% of breast cancer patients at risk of lymphedema, Dr Shah highlights the need for detection and early intervention. Results of a study evaluating bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) compared to tape measurement for the detection of lymphedema found that post-treatment surveillance with BIS reduced rates of lymphedema, indicating that BIS is more effective for its detection and early intervention. This interview took place at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2022 Congress in San Antonio, Tx.
