ASCO 2023 | Closing the loop: identifying, assessing, and meeting the needs of survivors and providers

Michael Jefford, MBBS, PhD, FRACP, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia, summarizes a meet-the-professor session at ASCO 2023 focusing on the needs assessment for cancer survivors. The session highlighted how survivors often have a wide range of unmet needs that are not properly addressed, including information, psychosocial support, and rehabilitation. Common issues faced by survivors and approaches to identifying their needs were also discussed. Prof. Jefford emphasizes the importance of integrating this process into the clinical workflow, not just in terms of asking about patients’ needs but also taking action to ensure they are met and the quality of life and overall well-being of survivors is effectively improved. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
