ASCO 2023 | Side effects of chemo vs. immunotherapy in brain cancer

Philipp Karschnia, MD, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany, highlights the need to differentiate side effects of traditional chemotherapy (e.g., methotrexate) and novel treatments like checkpoint inhibitors and CAR T cells in brain cancer. Traditional chemotherapy may cause acute and long-term effects, leading to cognitive issues and treatment limitations upon disease progression. In contrast, novel immunotherapies can result in unique neurotoxicity syndromes, such as Parkinsonism-like symptoms or diffuse brain swelling, presenting new challenges for researchers to understand and manage. Further research is essential to explore these distinct side effect profiles and develop appropriate strategies for patient care. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
