BTOG 2025 | Advancing liquid biopsy in lung cancer: early use and future applications

David O’Reilly, MBBCh, BAO, MSc, MRCPI, of Beaumont RCSI Cancer Centre, Dublin, Ireland, highlights the growing role of liquid biopsy in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment selection. He emphasizes the importance of using liquid biopsy at the earliest possible stage, ideally at a patient’s first healthcare interaction, to improve diagnostic efficiency. Beyond detecting key biomarkers like ALK and EGFR, liquid biopsy may provide insights into co-mutations such as TP53 and STK11. While promising for monitoring minimal residual disease and treatment response, further prospective evaluation is needed before widespread clinical adoption. This interview took place at the BTOG 2025 congress in Belfast, UK.
