Mitsuru Sasako, MD, PhD, Yodogawa Christian Hospital, Osaka, Japan, discusses the unpredictability of cancer outcomes, even in early-stage disease, based on his experience as a surgical oncologist. He recalls cases of unexpected recurrences in stage one patients and instances of prolonged survival in those with advanced-stage disease, like liver metastasis. Dr Sasako emphasizes the importance of personalized, shared decision-making with patients and staying open to applying new knowledge, including insights from subgroup analyses. He believes that while a cure cannot always be promised, it’s essential never to give up and to offer patients hope and tailored treatment options. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
