ASCO 2024 | Assessing the utility of EHR-based palliative care referrals in patients
Ravi Bharat Parikh, MD, MPP, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, comments on a cluster-randomized clinical trial (NCT05590962) investigating the impact of automated electronic health record (EHR)-based palliative care referrals in patients with stage 3 or 4 lung or non-colorectal gastrointestinal cancer. The trial assessed the efficacy of weekly EHR notifications to oncologists for high-risk patients, resulting in a significant increase in completed palliative care visits and a reduction in end-of-life chemotherapy. This interview took place during the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
