ESMO 2024 | Addressing unmet needs in metastatic urothelial carcinoma

Patrizia Giannatempo, MD, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan, Italy, highlights the significant unmet needs in metastatic urothelial carcinoma, particularly regarding treatment selection and the management of new therapies like enfortumab vedotin (EV) combined with pembrolizumab. Dr Giannatempo emphasizes the necessity for biomarkers that not only predict treatment efficacy but also assess potential toxicity, allowing for better baseline patient stratification. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind specific toxicities associated with EV- pembrolizumab, such as neurotoxicity and hyperglycemia, and advocates for more trials and real-world data to determine the practicality and safety of these treatment strategies. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
