ESMO 2024 | Current challenges in treating advanced GIST beyond first-line therapy

Piotr Rutkowski, MD, PhD, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Centre and Institute of Oncology, Warsaw, Poland, highlights the ongoing challenges in managing advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), particularly after progression on first-line therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) such as imatinib. While treatments like sunitinib and regorafenib provide additional options in later lines, progression-free survival (PFS) remains limited in subsequent therapies. Current clinical trials are focusing on improving outcomes in the second line of therapy, as significant advancements beyond fourth-line treatment remain elusive. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
