Piotr Rutkowski, MD, PhD, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Warsaw, Poland, discusses the reduction of surgical interventions in melanoma management, highlighting a study conducted by the Polish melanoma group that analyzed nearly 2,000 patients with stage II and III disease, and found a significant improvement in overall survival, particularly for BRAF-mutated patients, after the introduction of adjuvant therapy in 2021. Prof. Rutkowski notes that the 3-year overall survival rate for BRAF-mutated patients in stage III melanoma was 82%, a marked improvement compared to previous observations. This interview took place at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO 44) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
