ESSO 43 | Advances in breast reconstruction: the role of autologous fat grafting in mastectomy patients

Marc Mureau, MD, PhD, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands, discusses the complexities of breast reconstruction for patients undergoing mastectomy, emphasizing that many seek this option despite its invasiveness. Traditional methods, including implant-based reconstruction and autologous tissue flaps from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, involve significant surgery and scarring, along with potential long-term donor site morbidity. A multicenter, randomized controlled trial in the Netherlands explored a less invasive approach: autologous fat grafting, where fat is harvested via liposuction and injected into the chest area. While this method avoids large scars and reduces donor site complications, it requires multiple procedures and can be a lengthy process for patients. Continued advancements in these techniques are necessary to enhance patient experience and outcomes. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
