ESSO 43 | Integrating immunotherapy in surgical oncology: insights on GI cancers and peritoneal malignancies

Pompiliu Piso, MD, Krankenhaus Barmherzige Brüder Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany, discusses the importance of incorporating immunotherapy into surgical oncology practices. During an engaging session at the ESSO 2024 congress, he highlighted the promising activity of immunotherapeutic agents in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, which could potentially reduce tumor masses and allow for subsequent surgical interventions. Additionally, he addressed the ongoing debate regarding the role of systemic chemotherapy in treating peritoneal surface malignancies, particularly concerning its timing relative to surgery. The discussions underscored the need for further studies, particularly the results from ongoing trials in the Netherlands, before establishing definitive recommendations.
